Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then located many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking official commented the attack left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
